When you first log in, you need to take a diagnostic test so that we can recommend a level for you. This helps you choose lessons that are not too easy nor too difficult for you. The test takes about 30 minutes and consists of six parts. Each part contains a text and a set of five questions. You can click Prev and Next to go backwards and forwards but you must select an answer for each question before you can submit your answers for each part.
The more questions you get right, the harder the test gets. The more questions you answer incorrectly, the easier the test gets. At the end of the test, we recommend your level and show you how the Need to Read level compares against TOEIC and the Common European Framework language proficiency scale.
Need to Read organises the lessons into three broad levels: 1, 2 and 3. Each level is then sub-divided into bands. After the diagnostic test, you will receive both a level and a more specific band. We suggest that you choose lessons at your recommended level or lower to start with. However, if you feel like more of a challenge, you are free to take a lesson at any level.
